The Queen Mary was themode of transportation for the elite of western society. 2011 marks the 75th anniversary of the Queen Mary’s maiden voyage and a tour of the deck is as impressive now as it was then.
Construction on the R.M.S. Queen Mary began in 1930 in Scotland, and the ship was, from the beginning, destined to be in a class of its own. The maiden voyage in 1936 brought the Queen Mary to Cherbourg, France. The ship quickly became popular with the rich and famous. Future voyages would see the likes of Fred Astaire and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor on her decks. In 1939, the Queen Mary was drafted into service and used as a troopship during World War II. Given the ship’s camouflaged grey exterior, she earned the nickname of “the Grey Ghost”, and played a vital role in the success of the Allied Forces.
