How Our ‘Historic Downtown Los Angeles’ Group Tour Works
Red Line Tours offers our Historic Downtown Los Angeles Tour to private groups only. We do not currently offer this tour to the general public on a timed admission basis. Following is information on how we operate our group tours.
About the Tour
Our Historic Downtown Los Angeles Tour will take you back in time to Hollywood’s “Golden Era” beginning from the Broadway Historic Theatre District containing the largest concentration of movie palaces in the world. Your journey will include some of world’s most beautiful and original picture palaces including the elaborate Catalonian inspired Million Dollar Theatre, the Palace Theatre (seen in the film “Dreamgirls”), and the opulent Warner Bros. Downtown Theatre where “Roman Holiday” premiered in 1953 and which also stood in for the interior shots of the Ziegfeld Theatre during filming of “Funny Girl” (1968). You will be transported back in time as we visit the bustling Grand Central Market (a European style food hall), the palatial Biltmore Hotel where the Academy Awards was founded in 1927. Our tour continues with a visit to Dean Cornwell’s monumental Art Deco mural in the Cook Rotunda of the Richard Riordan Central Library – the third largest public library in the US. We continue to Edison Building (aka One Bunker Hill) and the extraordinarily beautiful Bradbury Building (featured in “The Artist” and “Bladerunner”). Because Downtown Los Angeles Historic District has one of the largest contiguous concentration of historic pre-WW2 architecture in America it is often used as a movie “back lot” for turn-of-the-century New York or Chicago. Films shot here include “Bladerunner”, “The Sting”, “Ghostbusters”, “Chaplin”, “Pay it Forward”, “Vertigo”, “Arthur”, “48 Hours” and “Terminator 3” among thousands of other films. When you visit Downtown Los Angeles you never know what filming you might see!
About Our Live Audio Equipment
All group tours utilize our famous Live Audio listening equipment helping each person in your group to hear as if the guide is standing right next to them. For insurance and liability purposes, our headsets are “over the ear” which offer maximum comfort and audibility while also allowing some ambient sound as we are crossing streets. We do not supply “ear bud” style headgear because ear buds block too much ambient sound. Group members may use their own ear buds if they wish.
Group Departure Times
We can offer this tour to groups anytime you like. Some key locations included in this tour, such as the Bradbury Building and Grand Central Market, are not accessible after 6:00pm so we recommend that this tour be planned for a launch time no later than 5:00pm.
Group Departure Location
There is no specific departure location for this tour however we suggest departing from a location near 3rd and Spring or 4th and Spring Streets. After we evaluate your group’s requirements we will suggest an appropriate meeting location.
Our group policy for our Historic Downtown Los Angeles Tour is based on a customer to guide ratio of 20 persons and no more than 30 persons. For example, if the total number of persons in your group is 50 persons we would assign 2 guides and allocate 25 persons per guide. Because our customer to guide ratio minimum is 20 persons your Group Minimum based on this scenario would be 40 persons (2 guides assigned times our 20 person per guide minimum) and your Group Maximum would be 60 persons (2 guides assigned times our 30 persons per guide maximum).
If your total group is less than 20 persons billing would be based on 20 persons times the net rate we offer you. For example, if you have 10 persons in your group we can offer you a group rate however we would invoice you for 20 persons times the net rate agreed upon.
Groups Over 200 Persons
We have the ability to assign as many as 8 guides and serve up to 200 persons at any one point in time. However, we do have ways to serve groups larger than 200 by alternating activities. For example, if you have 400 persons in your group we would plan to launch 200 persons on Historic Downtown Los Angeles while 200 persons eat lunch. We would then swap” activities (see below) for the next cycle.

Customer to Guide Ratio
As a rule of thumb we typically assign 1 guide for every 25 persons. We try to not exceed 30 persons on our Downtown tours for the comfort of your group and to also to be able to manage the group through sidewalk traffic and into the venues we visit. For example, if you have a group of 60 persons we would typically assign 2 guides to your group and place 30 persons with each guide. Our rule is to have at least 20 persons per guide.
Length of Tour
Our Historic Downtown Los Angeles is typically 1 hour and 30 minutes long (90minutes), however for groups we can shorten or lengthen the tour depending on your groups special requirements. We can also operate a “highlights” tour for time constrained groups.
Distance of Tour
Our Historic Downtown Los Angeles Tour as designed is a leisurely stroll covering a route that is approximately 1 mile.

Student Group Policy
Red Line Tours is a member of the Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA). We offer special discounted rates for student and youth groups whether you are a school, youth club (such as a scout group or 4H group) or if you are a tour operator representing a school or youth group. For student groups we offer 1 comp ticket for every 10 paid tickets. Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA) members also receive 2-hours of free step-on service as an amenity for groups with 30 or more paid group members. Contact us for more information on what we can do for your student or youth group.
Where to Begin?
Begin by contacting us to tell us about your group and describe your group’s requirements. We prefer that your initial contact is in writing so that we know we have everything we need including:
- Your group’s name. (If you are a tour operator we would like the name of your business and the group’s name as a reference)
- The total estimated number of persons in your group.
- Name of the legal entity responsible for your group if different from above (to enter into our Service Agreement with you).
- The date and time requested for service.
- The name, phone and email address of the person responsible for organizing your group.
- Any special needs we may need to know such as a wheelchair, or vision/hearing impaired group member.
Once we have this information we will provide you with a Net rate which will be discounted from our retail rate and will email you our standard Service Agreement to review and return to us with signature. If you chose to move forward with service we will set up your account with our Receivables department and will require the following information:
- Name of the legal entity responsible for the group if different from above.
- Name of person assigned to your account if different from above.
- Address, phone and email for accounting purposes.
Once we have the above information we will generate an invoice to match the Service Agreement we have issued you previously.
Group Payment Policy
Payment for your group can be made by company check or credit card. We prefer a company check Red Line Tours accepts most major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. Payment in full is required prior to service for all groups unless an agreement is made in writing.
